About Burney, California Real Estate
The Gateway to Endless Fun
Welcome to Burney, California!
Burney, California, is an unincorporated town and census-designated place (CDP) in Shasta County in the north-central region of the state. Its population was 3,217 at the 2000 census.
Burney was named after Samuel Burney, a settler in the area in the 1850s. Burney was found dead in the valley in the Spring of 1857, after a particularly cold and snowy winter. The region came to be called "the valley where Burney died," and finally just "Burney." Until 1887, the area was one big farm with a huge orchard, potato fields, hay fields and a big garden that grew every kind of vegetable one could want, which Mr. White had planted. The first post office in the area was named Burney Valley and was established on 6 December 1872. Henry Murphy was the first postmaster; and it was located at "bunker hill'" which was in the same building that also served as a stage stop, trading post and saloon.
Surrounded by timeless beauty, Burney is the gateway to endless fun and a great vacation spot for young and old alike. Located just 50 miles northeast of Redding on Highway 299 East, Burney is nestled at the base of Burney Mountain in the center of the picturesque Cascade Mountains. The area surrounding Burney offers a variety of activities, with numerous fishing spots, campgrounds and breathtaking scenery. The roads to and from Burney lead its residents and guests to a variety of adventures, from wilderness areas, fly fishing, boating, water skiing, bait fishing, parasailing, camping, hiking, day trips, carriage rides, the latest released movies, golfing, picnicking, modern motels, and Indian gaming. Burney is, in fact, a popular center for fly fishing, with wild brown and native rainbow trout in many nearby rivers and streams, including Hat Creek, the Pit River, and Burney Creek. Other attractions in the area include McArthur-Burney Falls Memorial State Park, home to the Burney Falls - a spectacular 129-foot, ice cold waterfall that issues from an underground spring and flows into nearby Lake Britton. .
Today, Burney is known as much for its picturesque and pleasant locale, climate and lifestyle. Communities like Burney, common in Upstate California, can't seem to help being friendly, down home, kinds of communities, given the relaxed atmosphere in this part of a very active state. Burney was, in fact, the filming location of the 1988s film "Stand by Me."
Calm, friendly, decidedly rural yet semi-cosmopolitan, Burney, California is a pleasant place to live, work, play, relax and enjoy.
